Looking to the Future

Technology changes by the day, how are we supposed to keep up with it all.

Whether it be the bombardment of breaking news, click bait headlines or the instant gratification that we crave from people interacting with us on social media, we need to be able to navigate this territory. How can we sift though all this content online to find the truth and just things we want to watch for entertainment. The landscape has changed and come a long way since the first humans connected to the internet. Now we hold all of its power in the palm of our hand.

Take a look at this to see how much content is on the internet...

My brain can't even comprehend how much content that is and I certainly would not be able to watch all of it in one lifetime. So how are we supposed to manage this? The simple answer is we physically can't, but there are ways that we can manage what we see and interact with and that all starts with being able manage how ling we are "plugged in" for. One thing that we can control is our time spent online and this is key to being able to navigate this changing landscape. If you don't want to be bombarded by the breaking news or the click bait headlines, you can simply not turn on the TV and avoid Twitter for a few hours. Instead try to do something different like reading a book or talking a walk. A walk for 20 minutes a day can help clear your head and reset the mind a bit so that you are not under a constant barrage of things from the internet. The key is to put the phone on silent for a while so that you are not distracted. This is not an easy task but after the first few times it really will help.

It is really important to be aware and stay up to date on the latest technology in order to stay ahead in the workplace, but sometimes new isn't always better. This is another important thing to keep in mind. The tools that we have had for years have been used for years for one major reason...they work and they work well. Sure there will be some new tech to come along that will take over, but usually it takes time to adapt and take over, and not and again there are new things that come along to help out, but just try to be aware of what you think will stay for a long time and what is just a minor trend. In the video field there are so many new cameras that have come out in the last few years that it is easy to get caught up in the hype and keep switching to the latest and greatest camera, but in reality the best camera you can have is the one that is in your hand and you are shooting with.

I will leave you with some really interesting thoughts on the change in content in the social media realm. Peter McKinnon is a very successful YouTuber with over 5 million subscribers and he talks about how the content creating field is changing as the social media platforms adapt to new features.
